Dance

Dance. I am so thankful for that word. I am thankful to be able to express myself through that word. Dance allows me to forget about all the worries, frustrations, and busyness in my life. It allows me to escape for just a moment and concentrate on something that I really enjoy doing; something that I do because I want to and not because I have to. I didn’t grow up a dancer, at least not a professional dancer. I danced around at home listening to songs on the radio or on my portable cassette or CD player, never once attending a dance class. Karen Lee Dance Theatre allowed me this opportunity. I started dancing with Karen Lee about six years ago at a Boys and Girls Club. Since then, I have received a scholarship from Karen Lee Dance and have participated in many charitable fundraisers, where I am dancing for a cause. Seeing the people out in the audience as they watch me up on stage doing what I truly enjoy is the best feeling ever. It’s a wonderful experience to be able to share this art form with so many others and perhaps allow them the opportunity to forget their worries in life for just a brief moment as they enjoy the show. The energy from the audience as they smile, clap along, sing along, and perhaps even dance along to the performance is amazing, and I have completely enjoyed every experience. Through dancing, I have become more aware of rhythm, timing, exercising, knowledge of my own body’s capabilities, and have gained more of an appreciation and understanding of the arts. Receiving a scholarship from Karen Lee Dance to fulfill what I truly enjoy doing was the best gift ever. I don’t know exactly how to repay this wonderful gift besides sharing my love for dance with others and “Dancing with Heart,” which is Karen Lee Dance Theatre’s belief. Thank you to Karen Lee Dance Theatre for allowing me that opportunity.
